Needs - Resources Finance Workshops

NEEDS - RESOURCES: UNDERSTANDING HOW THE STATE FUNDS YOUR DISTRICT
September 21 - Wakefield
September 22 - O’Neill
October 26 - Ogallala
October 27 - Alliance
November 2 - Bartley
November 3 - Grand Island
December 7 - Broken Bow

Every school district is funded differently. School Boards and Administrators who manage the resources of each district are best served by knowing how the State views and allocates their needs and resources. The workshop will feature former superintendents Carl Dietz and Matt Fisher, two school finance experts and Colby Coash, NASB Associate Executive/Government Relations Director. Learning how the State funds education and YOUR district makes you a better advocate and spokesperson for your district. Participants will learn:

  • How “Needs” are calculated.
  • How “Resources”, both State and Local are calculated.
  • A historical perspective of how school funding has changed.
  • The Legislative “levers” that are manipulated to achieve school funding outcomes.
  • Past and current legislative initiatives that could impact school funding.

Participants will be provided with data from their OWN district to make this presentation context. This workshop is suited for all board members and administrators wanting to learn more about how the State funding process works and how it impacts their district.

Why are we adding these events?

This year the Legislature passed LR 141, an interim study examining school finance. This is an interim study to examine School Finance. As part of this study, NASB was asked to provide some school board contacts from various schools across the State. Those school boards were identified for a variety of reasons, including their location within an identified legislative district, enrollment, budget, and/or geographical location. (If your district was identified as one where they were requesting contact information, you have already received notice.)  These requests from both members on the Education committee and members of the interim study committee led to conversations that indicated there is a need for some additional training regarding school finance and its connection to the State aid formula. In an effort to fulfill that need, we are hosting these new workshops.
